For the person named on the brief to watch fire precautions at one location during an event. You walk that location and act when a precaution fails.

What you will be able to do

  • Walk your location, name the fire precautions the brief relies on and record anything missing.
  • Compare the brief with the site and record the first difference that matters.
  • Report a precaution that is no longer in place, tell the next person and write the log entry.
  • On first sight of smoke or flame, raise the alarm, move people away and stay visible.
  • Decide whether you may use an extinguisher, based on whether you have been shown that type and what your brief says.

What the chapters cover

  • Walking your location and naming its fire precautions
  • Comparing the brief with what is on site
  • First action when you see smoke or flame
  • A smell, a haze or a report that may not be fire
  • Telling and moving the people at your location
  • Writing the log entry you will stand behind

Thirteen chapters follow the job in order, with thirteen quick-reference cards you may copy for use at your own event. Worked examples are composite illustrations, not accounts of real events.

Operational titles are for the person doing the job at one post, door, desk or location on the day. OTAS Live publishes 30 handbooks across ten areas of event work, each at Operational, Tactical and Strategic level.
