For the person working on an event site during the build, the show or the take-down: a site steward, a crew member, a runner or a volunteer.

What you will be able to do

  • Tell legal duties apart from event guidance, including where the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM) apply.
  • Say what your job on site covers, and which structural, electrical, plant and CDM duty-holder competences this book does not replace.
  • Decide whether work continues, pauses or stops when a vehicle, a cable, missing edge protection or the weather changes the risk.
  • Check a contractor's statement that 'it is signed off' against what you can see.
  • Adapt when the planned walkway, lighting or vehicle route differs from the drawing.

What the chapters cover

  • Knowing your area and who is in it
  • Comparing the site drawing with what is really there
  • Checking 'it is signed off' against what you can see
  • Stopping work, or refusing to let a contractor start
  • Moving people out of an area that is not safe
  • Writing the log entry and handing over

Thirteen chapters follow the job in order, with twelve quick-reference cards you may copy for use at your own event. Worked examples are composite illustrations, not accounts of real events.

Operational titles are for the person doing the job at one post, door, desk or location on the day. OTAS Live publishes 30 handbooks across ten areas of event work, each at Operational, Tactical and Strategic level.

UK law, nation by nation

Law as checked in September 2026, with England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland named separately.

Three levels in Site, Structures and Infrastructure

Each area of event work is covered at Operational, Tactical and Strategic level, so the series follows the job from the post on the ground to the decisions around it.
