For the person who finds the casualty: a steward, a door supervisor or a marshal who is nearest when someone needs help.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe a casualty, their location and what you can see, without naming a condition.
  • Decide whether to call, go or hold, and keep to it until the next person arrives or your brief says otherwise.
  • Give Event Control, or the other member of staff at a small event, a location a runner can find.
  • Record what you cannot see as 'not known' instead of filling the gap with a guess.
  • Stay where you can be seen until the next person arrives.

What the chapters cover

  • Describing the person, the place and what you can see
  • Calling, going to the person or holding your position
  • Giving Event Control and medical what they need
  • Staying with the person until the next person arrives
  • Looking after a child or a person who cannot speak for themselves
  • Handing over and writing the log entry

Thirteen chapters follow the job in order, with twelve quick-reference cards you may copy for use at your own event. Worked examples are composite illustrations, not accounts of real events.

Operational titles are for the person doing the job at one post, door, desk or location on the day. OTAS Live publishes 30 handbooks across ten areas of event work, each at Operational, Tactical and Strategic level.

Three levels in Medical, Welfare and Safeguarding

Each area of event work is covered at Operational, Tactical and Strategic level, so the series follows the job from the post on the ground to the decisions around it.
